HomeBase USA takes shelf robots chainwide
HomeBase USA, a farm-and-ranch retail chain, deployed Simbe Robotics'' Tally shelf-scanning robots and its Store Intelligence platform across all of its locations in Texas, Wyoming, Kansas and Missouri, completing the rollout in under three months (Simbe Robotics / PR Newswire, 2026). The expansion followed a pilot at two stores that reduced pricing errors by 92 percent, lowered controllable out-of-stocks by 58 percent, brought total out-of-stocks below 1 percent, and cut the time required for a full physical inventory from three days to less than one (PR Newswire, July 29, 2026; Chain Store Age, 2026).
HomeBase''s approach was to fold the robot''s shelf data into daily store routines rather than treat it as a standalone technology project: store leaders built the platform''s real-time alerts into existing workflows instead of running it alongside them. That distinction matters more than the hardware. Retailers have piloted shelf-scanning robots for years; the harder problem has been getting store teams to act on what the robot finds before the data goes stale.
Bealls automates its markdown ladder
Bealls Inc., the Florida-based off-price retailer, replaced its fixed-schedule markdown process with Oracle Retail Lifecycle Pricing Optimization, extending an existing Oracle Retail Merchandising relationship (Oracle newsroom, July 14, 2026; PR Newswire, 2026). Previously, clearance items moved through pricing tiers on a fixed calendar regardless of how they were actually selling. The new system prices markdowns against real-time demand, current inventory position, regional variation and projected lifecycle margin instead of a preset schedule.
In the year since implementation, Bealls reported a 25 percent increase in clearance sales dollars (Oracle newsroom, 2026). Oracle and Bealls did not disclose the pre-implementation baseline dollar figure, so the percentage should be read as a relative improvement rather than an absolute one. It is also a single retailer''s result, not an industry average, and Oracle has a direct commercial interest in the outcome as the vendor. The mechanism, replacing calendar-based markdowns with demand-responsive pricing, is consistent with what other retailers have reported testing over the past two years, but this particular figure comes from one account.
Walgreens adds a 14th robotic pharmacy hub
Walgreens opened a micro-fulfillment center in Kent, Washington on July 22, its 14th such facility nationally (Supply Chain Dive, 2026; Chain Store Age, 2026). The Kent site uses robotic technology to fill and package prescriptions in bulk, supporting roughly 196 nearby stores, 122 of them in Washington state, and is expected to process about 7 million prescriptions a year. The facility is also expected to add 85 jobs locally (Supply Chain Dive, 2026).
Walgreens paused its micro-fulfillment buildout in 2023 before restarting it in 2025; the Kent center is the clearest sign yet that the network is back to active expansion. The company''s stated goal for these centers is to move routine, high-volume prescription filling out of individual store pharmacies so pharmacists can spend more time on tasks that require a licensed person, such as controlled substances and time-sensitive orders. Walgreens now operates 14 of these hubs supporting more than 5,000 stores nationwide (Supply Chain Dive, 2026).
What the three have in common
None of these are shopper-facing AI features. There is no chatbot, no personalization engine, no generative recommendation tool in any of the three. All three are investments in the parts of retail operations that customers never see: shelf accuracy, markdown timing, and prescription throughput. And in each case, the retailer moved from a bounded pilot to a full or near-full deployment within months, not years, with a specific operating metric attached to the decision.
That pattern is worth tracking because it differs from the AI story that dominated retail coverage over the past two years, which was largely about customer-facing pilots that had not yet scaled. These three moved past the pilot stage inside a single reporting quarter.
What to watch next
Whether other regional grocery and hardware chains follow HomeBase USA''s lead with chainwide shelf-scanning rollouts, and whether Bealls'' demand-responsive markdown results hold up once Oracle or another retailer discloses a second data point beyond this single account, are the two threads worth tracking from here.
