Three of the largest platforms touching retail commerce each shipped competing infrastructure for AI-driven shopping within the same four-month window this year. Salesforce, Google and OpenAI are no longer treating agentic checkout as a research project. They are shipping it, and asking retailers to build for all three at once.
Salesforce Makes Its Store Agents the System of Record
Salesforce announced general availability of Agentforce Commerce on July 6, 2026, its largest release yet for the platform (Salesforce, 2026). The update ships three named agents: a Shopper Agent that carries a customer conversation from product discovery through checkout, a Buyer Agent aimed at B2B purchasing over WhatsApp and SMS, and a Merchant Agent for catalog and inventory management on the back end. The release also includes native integration into ChatGPT, letting retailers sync product catalogs directly from Salesforce's Business Manager without third-party middleware.
Salesforce also published two performance figures alongside the release: that AI-assistant traffic to retail sites grew 119% year over year in the first half of 2025, and that retailers running its Shopper Agent grew sales 59% faster than retailers that had not deployed it (Salesforce, 2026). Salesforce did not publish the underlying methodology, sample size or comparison set for either number. Both should be read as the vendor's own account of its product, not as independently verified figures.
Google Extends Checkout Beyond Its Own Shopping Tab
At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google announced an expansion of its Universal Commerce Protocol and a new feature called Universal Cart, which lets a shopper collect items from multiple retailers into one cart and check out with Google Pay in a few taps, or hand the cart off to complete the purchase on the merchant's own site (Google, 2026). Launch partners named at the event include Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart, Wayfair and Shopify merchants such as Fenty and Steve Madden. Google also added buy-now-pay-later options through Affirm and Klarna.
The rollout began in the United States on May 19, 2026, across Search, with the Gemini app following that summer and YouTube and Gmail to come after. Google has said it plans to extend Universal Cart to Canada and Australia next, then the United Kingdom (Google, 2026; Search Engine Land, 2026).
OpenAI Retreats From Instant Checkout, Hands the Register Back to Retailers
OpenAI took a different route. On March 24, 2026, the company revamped ChatGPT's shopping experience, stepping back from its Instant Checkout feature, which had let ChatGPT complete a purchase directly, and refocusing ChatGPT on product discovery instead (CNBC, 2026; Retail Dive, 2026). Purchases now route through dedicated retailer-run apps built inside ChatGPT. Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair are among the retailers building on this model, with Sephora's app giving shoppers loyalty rewards and samples tied to their Beauty Insider profile and Target running an earlier beta version (Retail Dive, 2026).
The reversal matters because it concedes a point Salesforce and Google are both betting on: that shoppers trust the retailer, not the AI platform, to hold the transaction. OpenAI's Instant Checkout launched with Etsy and Shopify last year as a proof of concept. Handing the purchase step back to retailers a year later is a tacit admission that the earlier version did not stick.
What the Data Says About Adoption
Retailers are not waiting to see who wins this fight before spending. In PYMNTS Intelligence's Global Digital Shopping Index, fielded in March 2026 across 5,841 consumers and 1,185 merchants in the United States, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, 37% of merchants named AI shopping assistants as the digital capability they most plan to invest in over the next three years, more than any other category (PYMNTS Intelligence, 2026). The same study found merchant investment in cross-channel shopping features fell nine percentage points even as consumer demand for those features held steady, a sign that budget is shifting toward agentic tools rather than growing to cover both.
On the consumer side, the same index found 47% of online shoppers said they used AI during their most recent purchase, and 64% said they expect to use an AI shopping agent within two years (PYMNTS Intelligence, 2026).
What to Watch Next
None of these three systems talk to each other. A retailer that wants a presence in ChatGPT, in Google's Universal Cart, and in Salesforce's Shopper Agent is building against three separate integration paths with three separate data requirements, not one agentic commerce standard. Google's expansion into Canada and Australia, expected later this year, will be the next concrete test of whether Universal Cart's cross-merchant model holds up outside the US market it launched in. Whether any of the three consolidates into a shared protocol, or whether retailers simply end up maintaining all three in parallel, is the open question through the rest of 2026.
