Hyperscalers Raise 2026 Capex Again as Memory Prices Squeeze Cloud

The three biggest cloud vendors all raised spending in the same week

Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet reported quarterly earnings within nine days of each other in late July 2026, and every one of them told investors it is spending more on data center infrastructure than it planned to a few months ago. The reason is no longer just GPU demand. It is the price of the memory chips that go inside every server they buy.

Three earnings calls, one direction

Alphabet reported first, on July 22. Google Cloud revenue climbed 82% year over year to $24.8 billion, up from 63% growth the prior quarter, and the company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to as much as $205 billion (Alphabet, Q2 2026 Earnings Call, July 22, 2026). Cloud backlog, the value of signed contracts not yet recognized as revenue, reached $514 billion.

Microsoft followed on July 29. Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%, accelerating from 40% the quarter before, and annual Azure revenue passed $100 billion for the first time in the fiscal year that closed June 30 (CNBC, "Microsoft (MSFT) Q4 earnings report 2026," July 29, 2026). CFO Amy Hood told analysts Microsoft now expects about $190 billion in calendar-2026 capital spending, up 61% from 2025, and that roughly $25 billion of the increase is not new capacity at all. It is higher component prices for the same equipment the company had already planned to buy (The Register, "Microsoft lifts 2026 CapEx by $25B to cover price rises," April 30, 2026).

Amazon reported on July 30. AWS segment sales rose 37% to $42.2 billion, its fastest growth in 18 quarters, with operating income of $16.6 billion (About Amazon, "Amazon Q2 2026 earnings report," July 30, 2026). CEO Andy Jassy raised the company's 2026 cash capex target to roughly $220 billion, up $20 billion from its prior guidance, and told investors the increase is driven largely by rising memory costs rather than new orders (CNBC, "Amazon (AMZN) Q2 earnings report 2026," July 30, 2026).

Memory, not just chips, is now a line item CFOs call out by name

DRAM and NAND flash prices have risen sharply through 2026 as AI data center buildouts compete with consumer electronics for the same fabs. Deloitte's technology research group described the shortage as deeper than expected and said pricing pressure may not ease until 2029 (Deloitte, "Why the memory chip crunch is greater than expected," 2026). Fierce Network reported that memory cost, specifically, accounted for roughly $20 billion of Amazon's latest capex increase (Fierce Network, "Memory drives Amazon capex up another $20B for 2026," July 2026).

That distinction matters for anyone budgeting cloud spend. A capex increase tied to new GPU orders means more compute capacity is coming online. A capex increase tied to component prices means the same infrastructure now costs more to build, and hyperscalers have historically passed that kind of cost through to customers over time rather than absorbing it.

What "capacity constrained" means for buyers right now, not eventually

All three companies described demand outrunning supply, not the other way around. Jassy said AWS will not have enough capacity to meet customer demand in 2026, and expects the same to be true in 2027, even after the higher spending (Fortune, "Andy Jassy said Amazon will spend $220 billion this year, and still won't have enough capacity to meet demand," July 30, 2026). AWS's order backlog reached $496 billion, roughly 2.5 times what it was a year earlier (Tech Times, "AWS Backlog Hits $496B as Amazon Raises AI Spend to $220B and Capacity Runs Short," July 31, 2026). Hood said in April that Microsoft expects to remain capacity constrained at least through 2026 (Directions on Microsoft, "Microsoft: Expect Capacity Constraints, CapEx Acceleration to Continue," 2026).

For a platform team planning reserved-capacity purchases or negotiating an enterprise agreement renewal, this is the operative fact underneath the growth headlines: the constraint is not demand for cloud services, it is the physical supply of chips and power to run them. AWS already raised its own GPU reservation pricing twice in the first half of 2026, a separate development from the capex story but consistent with it. Backlog growth and capacity constraints on this scale tend to give a vendor more room to hold or raise reserved-instance and specialized-hardware pricing, not less.

What to watch next

Microsoft reports its next quarter on October 27, 2026, the first full readout of how the higher capex guidance is landing. Amazon and Alphabet typically report in the same window in late October. Watch whether backlog growth at AWS and Google Cloud keeps outpacing revenue growth, a sign supply is still the limiting factor rather than customer appetite, and whether Azure or Google Cloud follow AWS in raising reserved GPU capacity pricing before year end.
