Two unrelated announcements from the data stack this month point at the same shift: the tools that move, transform and describe enterprise data are consolidating into fewer vendors and fewer competing standards.
Fivetran and dbt Labs finish their merger, ship dbt Core v2.0
Fivetran and dbt Labs completed their all-stock merger on June 1, 2026, five and a half months after announcing it on October 13, 2025 (Fivetran, 2026). George Fraser remains CEO of the combined company; dbt Labs founder Tristan Handy is President. The two companies say they now serve a combined community of more than 100,000 data teams (dbt Labs, 2026).
Alongside the merger, dbt Labs open-sourced dbt Core v2.0 under an Apache 2.0 license, built on a Rust-based runtime the company calls the dbt Fusion engine (dbt Labs developer blog, 2026). It ships as two distributions: the open-source dbt-core and a proprietary Fusion distribution. The company also introduced dbt Wizard, an AI agent in beta that reads a project's lineage, tests, contracts and run history to answer questions and modify dbt models in natural language, available through both the dbt platform and a CLI (dbt Labs, Wizard overview, 2026). dbt Labs held a live event on July 22, 2026 walking through Wizard use cases in both surfaces.
What this means for a data team evaluating the stack: ingestion (Fivetran) and transformation (dbt) are no longer separate purchasing decisions from separate vendors. A team buying one now buys both from the same company, running across Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and Redshift alike.
Snowflake's semantic standard adds a financial services group
Separately, the Open Semantic Interchange initiative, the vendor-neutral specification for defining business metrics and data objects that Snowflake launched in September 2025 with Salesforce, dbt Labs, BlackRock and others, formed a Financial Services Semantic Working Group that held its first meeting on June 4, 2026 (BusinessWire, 2026). The group brings together banking, insurance, asset management and market infrastructure practitioners to agree on shared definitions for financial domain objects, with data provider Cotality and Equilar's ExecAtlas confirmed as founding participants (BusinessWire, 2026).
The point of a semantic standard is narrow but real: today, two BI tools connected to the same warehouse can calculate "active customer" or "net revenue" differently because each vendor's semantic layer defines it independently. OSI is an attempt to get vendors to agree on one definition that AI agents and BI tools alike can read the same way, rather than each retraining or reconfiguring against a different one.
Why these are the same story
A merger and a standards initiative look like different categories of news, but both are responses to the same problem: a fragmented data stack makes it harder to trust what an AI agent does with enterprise data unless every tool in the chain treats a metric the same way. Fivetran and dbt Labs removed one seam by putting ingestion and transformation under one roof. Snowflake, dbt Labs, Salesforce and their partners are trying to remove a different seam by agreeing on shared definitions instead of each vendor shipping a competing one. Neither fixes the other's gap. A unified ingestion-and-transformation vendor still needs an agreed semantic layer to hand off to a BI tool from a different company, and a semantic standard does not help if the underlying pipelines are still stitched together by hand.
What to watch next
dbt Labs has not set a general-availability date for dbt Wizard beyond its current beta; that release will show whether an AI agent that reads dbt's own metadata performs differently from general-purpose coding assistants pointed at the same repository. On the standards side, the Financial Services Semantic Working Group's next public output, a draft specification for financial domain objects, is the test of whether OSI produces a schema data teams actually adopt or one more specification alongside the fragmented ones it was meant to replace.
