What happened

Cedars-Sinai Health System announced on May 20, 2026 that it has deployed OpenEvidence, an AI-powered clinical search platform, across its entire clinical staff rather than starting with a limited pilot. The rollout gives physicians, nurses, pharmacists and therapists system-wide access to a tool that answers clinical questions using peer-reviewed medical literature.

The distinguishing feature of this deployment is integration with Cedars-Sinai's Epic electronic health record. According to OpenEvidence's own announcement, clinicians can query the platform with a specific patient's prior procedures, comorbidities, medications, allergies and lab data pulled directly from the chart, rather than typing that context in by hand. OpenEvidence describes Cedars-Sinai as the first academic health system to deploy what the company calls "patient-aware clinical intelligence" at enterprise scale.

Who is affected

Access extends beyond physicians. Cedars-Sinai's announcement names nurses, pharmacists and therapists among the staff who now have platform access, following a pattern set by Mount Sinai Health System, which rolled OpenEvidence out across seven hospitals in March 2026 with licenses for registered nurses and pharmacists as well as physicians. Sutter Health was the first health system to deploy OpenEvidence inside Epic, in February 2026, though that rollout was limited to physicians.

Shaun Miller, M.D., Cedars-Sinai's chief health informatics officer, said the health system chose an enterprise-wide rollout over a pilot program to ensure equitable access across specialties and to gather broader feedback than a smaller test group would produce.

The deployment lands on a company that has grown quickly. OpenEvidence says it now has 860,000 licensed-verified clinicians using the platform in the United States, including more than 650,000 physicians, and closed a $250 million Series D round in January 2026 that valued the company at $12 billion.

What clinicians should know

Cedars-Sinai and OpenEvidence both state that patient data pulled into a session is used only to answer that specific clinical query and is not stored afterward or reused for any other purpose. Cedars-Sinai says the deployment went through its standing AI governance process, in which a committee of data scientists, clinical experts and administrative leaders reviews and audits AI systems before they go live in clinical settings.

The health system also says it intends to layer its own care pathways and clinical protocols into the platform over time, meaning the tool's answers would eventually reflect Cedars-Sinai-specific practice guidance in addition to the published literature OpenEvidence already searches. Neither party has published a timeline for that addition, and no outcome data has been released yet on how the patient-context feature changes clinician query volume, response accuracy or time spent per case at Cedars-Sinai specifically.

Cedars-Sinai runs on OpenEvidence's ad-supported model, the same commercial arrangement the company uses with its other health system deployments, meaning clinicians do not pay individually to use the platform.

What happens next

Cedars-Sinai is the third major health system to put OpenEvidence directly inside Epic in 2026, after Sutter Health in February and Mount Sinai in March, and the first to add live patient context rather than literature search alone. The announcement arrived alongside a separate OpenEvidence product launch: a native speech-to-speech interface called Voice Mode, which lets a clinician ask a question aloud and hear a cited answer read back, sourced from outlets including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Cochrane and NCCN guidelines.

Whether other Epic-based health systems follow with their own enterprise, patient-context deployments rather than smaller pilots is the next thing to watch. So is whether Cedars-Sinai publishes any outcome data from the rollout, since none has surfaced yet beyond the health system's own description of its governance process.
