Salesforce's Agentforce Sales and the Clari-Salesloft Merger, Explained

Two moves, one direction

Two changes this year point at the same shift in sales technology: fewer separate tools, more automated middle steps. Salesforce renamed Sales Cloud to Agentforce Sales and shipped AI agents that now handle prospecting and lead qualification directly inside the CRM record. Separately, Clari, a forecasting platform, and Salesloft, a sales engagement platform, completed a merger to become one company. Both moves push the CRM, the engagement tool and the forecast toward fewer systems that talk to each other automatically, instead of reps and RevOps stitching the picture together by hand.

For SDR and AE teams, this changes where the manual work sits. It does not remove the work. It moves it.

Salesforce folds prospecting into the CRM record

Salesforce's Summer '26 release began rolling out to customers on June 13, 2026, and renamed Sales Cloud to Agentforce Sales (Salesforce, 2026). The name change reflects a functional one: AI agents now operate inside the CRM record rather than beside it.

The Prospecting Agent researches CRM history, web data and third-party sources overnight, then delivers a ranked list of accounts and contacts each morning inside Salesforce and Slack, with a stated "why now" reason and a draft outreach message attached to each one. Once a rep reviews and approves a message, the agent can send it, answer the prospect's follow-up questions, and book the meeting on its own (Salesforce, 2026). The Customer Engagement Agent, generally available since June 15, 2026, holds two-way conversations with prospects across a company's website and email, answers product questions using grounded CRM and company content, and hands a lead to a human rep once the lead is ready to talk (Salesforce, 2026).

The practical change for an SDR is that early qualification, the work of deciding whether a lead is worth a call, increasingly happens before the lead reaches a human queue. The rep's first real touch moves later into the buying process, closer to the point where the prospect is already asking specific questions.

Clari and Salesloft merge forecasting with engagement

The second move is structural rather than functional. Clari and Salesloft completed their merger on December 3, 2025, becoming one company under CEO Steve Cox (Clari and Salesloft, 2025). The combined company says it serves more than 5,000 organizations and covers $10 trillion in annual revenue under management across customers including Adobe, IBM and Zoom. These are the company's own figures at the time the merger closed, not independently audited numbers (Clari and Salesloft, 2025).

The logic of the deal is straightforward: engagement data, what a rep says on a call and how a sequence performs, should sit next to forecast data, whether that pipeline is actually going to close, inside one system instead of two that sync imperfectly. That gap is real. Engagement tools and forecasting tools have historically come from separate vendors, and RevOps teams have spent years building the connective tissue between them by hand.

Forrester analyst Anthony McPartlin wrote when the deal was announced in August 2025 that "from a product standpoint, to me the merger raises more questions than answers at this point," calling it a "high-risk, high-reward gambit" given the technology overlap between the two platforms (Forrester, 2025). Seven to eight months after the merger closed, the two products still run on separate interfaces, and the joint customer FAQ posted to both companies' community sites describes a unified roadmap as still being worked on rather than published (Clari and Salesloft, 2026). Teams buying into the combined platform today are buying a stated direction, not a finished product.

What to evaluate if you are choosing tools now

Two questions matter more than feature lists. First, where does the agent's output land: does a qualified lead or a forecast signal write back into the same record your reps already work from, or does it require a manual copy between systems? Second, for any vendor mid-merger or mid-acquisition, ask directly whether the products you would actually use are integrated today or sit on a roadmap. "Coming in a future release" is a fair answer from a vendor. It is not the same as "available now," and the difference determines whether your team gets value this quarter or next year.

What commonly goes wrong

The failure mode with agentic prospecting tools is qualification drift. An agent tuned to fill a rep's calendar can book meetings that look qualified on paper and are not, and the cost shows up later in the AE's win rate rather than in the SDR's activity numbers. Checking the agent's "why now" reasoning against actual close rates, not just meeting volume, is the way to catch this early.

The failure mode with platform mergers is integration debt: two products sold as unified that stay operationally separate for a long stretch after the deal closes. Forrester flagged this as the central risk in the Clari-Salesloft deal before it closed, and the companies' own customer FAQ, published after the merger, has not yet described the products as merged. Buyers evaluating either move this year should ask for the current state of the product, not the stated direction.
